fLiP iT fRiDaY: Jenny @ Wondrous Reads

Jenny @ Wondrous ReadsWe’re back this week for fLiP iT fRiDaY, chatting with Jenny from Wondrous Reads, @WondrousReads on Twitter.

*Hi, Jenny!*

Describe a typical day in your life.

I get up, go to work (Borders), and then come home and do internet stuff for a few hours. That consists of: my blog, checking emails, and posting Twilight news on BellaAndEdward and ReelzChannel. Then I go to bed and read. On my days off, just repeat all that, but add more reading and remove the work!

What is your favorite YA book and why? Or, which YA book has had the most profound effect on you and why?

I’ll answer both. My favourite YA book is TWILIGHT by Stephenie Meyer (do I really need to list the reasons?). And the book that has had the most effect on me is THE BOOK THIEF. The author… the writing… inspiring… and I could go on. Simply put, it’s a masterpiece.

What are 5 of your favorite things?

Can I cheat and have 6?

  1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
  3. reading
  4. TV shows
  5. Tuna
  6. and the internet.

Wow, Tuna made it up there with TWILIGHT and reading? With a capital T besides? You must really love your tuna! 🙂

How long have you been blogging, and how did you get your book blogging start?

I’ve been blogging since January 17th, 2009. I think that’s the exact date. I used to post all my reviews on the Amazon and Borders sites, then one day came home from work and just thought “Aha! A book blog! Why not?!” (or something like that). I emailed Jocelyn at Teen Book Review to ask for some blogging advice, and she really helped me. She posted about my blog, and lo and behold, I got my first follower! I was pretty excited about that. 🙂

Are you planning any upcoming new features or special content on your book blog and/or is there anything specific you want potential new visitors to know about your blog?

I currently don’t have plans for anything new, though I have my first guest post coming up soon! (or it may have already been by the time you read this). As for new visitors… I have a cool feature called US Vs. UK, where I compare a book’s different covers (I’m from the UK, which is why I had this idea: some of our covers are awful). I love doing it, because it fascinates me how one book can have two different covers that say completely different things.

I love this feature. I’ve seen some strikingly different US vs. UK covers on the 2009 Debutantes book list (Carrie Ryan’s THE FOREST OF HANDS AND TEETH and R.J. Anderson’s KNIFE come to mind), and it always amazes me how publishers market the exact same story with such completely different imagery, fonts, design, colors, and overall look and feel for the US and the UK.

In addition to blogging, what other creative pursuits do you enjoy?

I like writing news articles and working on websites. I’ve worked on BellaAndEdward.com for over a year now, and I’ve loved every second of it. I also write news posts and articles for ReelzChannel.com. I currently cover the Twilight, If I Stay, Maximum Ride and Hunger Games movies, which is exciting!

What do you want to be when you “grow up”?

I have no idea, but I wish I did. I’m going to say something to do with writing… maybe writing reviews, or working for a website full time? Who knows!

I vote for something to do with writing, too. Yay!

What are 3 things you’d like to do or accomplish in your lifetime?

I’d like to meet Sarah Michelle Gellar, Joss Whedon and Stephenie Meyer. Does that count as my 3? If not, I’ll add that I want to read every book I own that I haven’t yet read. For me to do that, I think I might have to clone myself.

Tell us something that people who know you in real life would be surprised to learn about you.

I have a book blog! Very few people know this, believe it or not. I don’t know if they’d approve. And I don’t care! Wow, that was a boring answer. Sorry about that.

Funny enough, a few people have mentioned their closeted blog status on fLiP iT fRiDaY. But none that are actual bookstore employees. Still, it makes me wonder now just how many closeted YA book bloggers are out there walking around, going to work, eating food, breathing in the fresh air, acting like they’re totally normal when in reality, they’re secretly reading books and writing about them online!

*Insert psycho theme song here*

I’m telling you. YA book bloggers (and the authors that love them) are going to take over the world. Look at your neighbors and significant others and BFFs. Could they, too, be blogging in secret? Don’t say Jenny and I didn’t warn you! 😉

*More psycho music*

Now, it’s time for Apocalypse Mad Libs!

If I ever had to face a demon invasion I’d want Cassandra Clare on my side, because she knows their strengths and weaknesses, and which weapon is most appropriate for instant death.

If she wasn’t available, I’d take Jace Wayland from The Mortal Instruments, because he’s a kick-ass hot Shadowhunter who I’m secretly madly in love with.

In any case, if I only had 1 day to live before the end of the world, I’d eat a tuna mayo sandwich and a glass of apple juice, and then I’d tell everyone, “I’m going to watch Season 4 of Buffy – follow me to discover one of the greatest wonders of the world!”

Thanks for stopping by fLiP iT fRiDaY today, Jenny (and enjoy your tuna mayo sandwich)! All, don’t forget to check out Jenny’s blog at Wondrous Reads and follow her at @WondrousReads on Twitter.

  1. This is a terrific feature! I’m kind of envious – I would have loved to have my book blog when I was a young adult! Too bad we didn’t own a computer. I feel so old!

    • I know what you mean. My senior year of college, we had to take a computer science class, and they *made* us get an email account. I resisted as long as I could. Then finally I had to walk all the way over to this weird windowless building on the other side of campus, fill out a bunch of forms, and get my PINE account on UNIX. I had to keep a printout next to the computer with instructions on how to log in and check my email!

But anyway… you are never to old for fLiP iT fRiDaY! So if you’d like to be featured, just let me know and I’ll send you the questions! 🙂

  2. You’re right. So many book bloggers are closeted. Most people don’t know that I have a book blog, either. I love tuna too! 😉

    • See? It’s so true. Book bloggers everywhere… come out, come out wherever you are! 🙂

  3. What a fun interview! I think it’s funny that so many book bloggers are “in the closet.” But I suppose one of the things that got me started with blogging was the fact that I don’t really know a lot of readers and I needed an outlet to talk about books.

I love Madlibs! I want to play Madlibs too!

  4. Great interview, Sarah and Jenny! I love Jenny’s blog. Not many people know that I have a book blog either, it must be a YA book blogger thing!

  5. I love Jenny’s blog! And oh so jealous she gets to work in a bookstore. I’m one that isn’t a closet book blogger. (I have too big of a fat mouth not to talk about what’s going on in the YA blog community to people. Whether they care or not is another story.)
