As a retired pediatrician (1999) and medical educator (2008), I never experienced YA literature. The teens in the practice probably did but never shared their reading experiences. Medical students are too overwhelmed with other stuff to read fun!
My 50th high school reunion was one month ago. All we had in the 50's was the Hardy Boys and Mad magazine.
Will the thoughts and ideas expressed in this genre make for better parenting, successful careers? How would you measure the outcomes?

Great post! Here's to hoping that the boom also extends to the smaller GLBT YA fiction market.

I love YA fiction, too. Sarah Dessen is awesome-- and I like Chris Crutcher's books a lot, too. Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian is not to be missed.
